Let’s face it, going to a game tester’s interview or any job interview for that matter can be a pain in the ass. You begin to worry about all kinds of nonsense that you would otherwise never have thought about. Chilling thoughts of disapproval arise in your mind. Things like “Do I look good in these clothes” or “I wonder if they’re going to like me” start popping out of nowhere. You feel like you’re being evaluated and you don’t like it one bit. Why is that so?
Because you ARE being evaluated! These people want to probe you inside and out to see if you’re going to be a good fit for their game testing position or whatever position you are aiming for in the video game industry.
In their awful probing, many interviewers like to ask the question: What are some of your weaknesses?- (What to say )
and at this point you better think before you speak or you might let out a big can of worms that will dig your grave for you. (not really, but it would really suck if you showed up for the interview and didn’t get the job
Answering this question is pretty much like playing with fire because if you say you don’t have any weaknesses you’re pretty much screwed. They’re going to think this SOB is full of himself so much that he thinks were so dumb that we’re going to believe that he is the one person on the planet that doesn’t have any weaknesses. (not a good thing for them to think about you).
And on the other hand if you start listing ALL the reasons of why they shouldn’t hire you its very likely that they won’t. So don’t start listing all your worst qualities. Saying things like: “i’m so lazy the only thing I ever do besides sleep is play Zelda” or “I don’t like to read or follow orders so i always throw away the instruction manuals before reading them” and especially not the old adidas “All Day I Dream About Sex”. Responding in these manners will get you no where.
What you should do instead is carefully craft your response before hand so that you can say them clearly when you’re on the spot with your clammy hands and huge sweat drop on your forehead (from the bright lights, not because your nervous). You want to:
***Weave a sort of strength (reason why they should hire you) into these weaknesses (supressed passions) that you mention.***
For example, you coud say: One of my weaknesses is that i’m extremely passionate about video games, and sometimes I get really carried away and lose track of time and forget to do other things I have to do. (take out the trash?). Oh and I’m a perfectionist, I tend to just keep trying to do whatever i’m doing better and better so that i can make it as perfect as possible even though I kind of know that perfect does not exist; so I just spend HOURS trying to get it to that point.
*In the above example you pretty much nailed it right on the head. You showed that you have passion, that you work hard, like to improve, are are willing to do the best that you can, all while disclosing somewhat of your “weaknesses” to answer the question.
So there you go, put this into use in your next game tester job interview and it will do wonders for you.
