Once you do all the dirty work to get a job interview in the video game industry you’ll eventually meet up for an interview. Now this job could be as a video game tester, an alpha game tester, a graphic designer, or a video game programmer. Anyway, you’ll have to do an interview for your job and I think I should warn you about the danger that exists if you use the wrong words during this interview crucial time period.

For instance one of the worst words you can use in the midst of any negotiation time is “I want” or “I wanted this…. or that…” The Bottom line is that your video game job interviewer doesn’t really give a damn about what you want. At the time of your job inteview you are not even an employee of theirs and they don’t owe you anything. If you come across as a “wanter” who just expects others to take care of him and give things to him instead of him being the one that will provide a valuable service, then they will pretty much flip a switch in their head and they will say “Thanks for coming, we’ll call YOU” But then they probably won’t call you.

The Next Words You Shouldn’t Say In the Video Games Job Interview

So once, they kind of like you as a possible job candidate, you may have to negotiate some of the things in your job like, uh, SALARY, or dumb stuff like that that nobody cares about. But assuming you do care about your video game job salary, if they come up with a figure that you think is kind of low DON’T say ” I expected a lot more” or “You gotta be kidding me”. Both are job interview killers. By saying “I expected” you are putting yourself above them and making it seem as though you have certain expectations that they must measure up to. They will think you put yourself on a pedestal. But remember that you are trying out for a job, you’re not an employee yet, and you shouldn’t disrespect the offer they made you.

But don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you to behave like a whipped puppy with his tail between his legs.

The Appropriate Words For The Video Game Job Interview (Preparation)

In the negotiation session, if there is something were you must negotiate, and they present you with an offer you believe is a bit too low, the right thing to say is “I was hoping for this figure…..” or “lets see what we can do”. By using these phrases you acknowledge you place as a possible employee and declare that your higher salary is a “hope” which is what it is (not an order or an expectation) so they don’t feel threatened or disrespected by you telling them their offer *sucks*.

Also, By using words such as “lets see what we can do” you are refering to one another as members of a team, and that’s what you want to be. You want to cooperate and be on the same side. This way you are not in an adversarial or tight spot where conflicts can erupt.
